Historically, German colonists established the first public electricity supply in Tanzania, then called Tanganyika in 1908 in Dar es salaam. It served railway workshops and parts of the town where the colonists were mostly staying. In 1920, when the Tanganyika area was placed under British protection, a government Electricity Department was created to pick up and operate public facilities left by the Germans.
