ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
UNICEF says it is responsible for us to protect the rights of children everywhere. The 1989 Convention on the rights of the child (CRC) sets out the general and indivisible rights applicable to each child, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in 2015,
We remind governments in the area of the commitments they made to all children through th SDGs and help them monitor their progress.
Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989, the convention on the rights of the child (CRC) has changed the way children are viewed and treated – that is, as human beings with different rights rather than recipients of passive aid. It recognizes that childhood is a vulnerable time, and that children need special care and protection.
The CRC is the first International Legal Rights Initiative for children. It has been ratified by every country in the world, except the United States, making it the most widely ratified human rights convention in history.
Through its 54 articles, The CRC sets minimum standards for children’s well-being at every stage of their development. It applies to everyone under the age of 18 (definition of a child), regardless of their gender, origin, religion, disability.
