ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest and first public university in Tanzania located 13 km west of Dar es Salaam City, occupying 1,625 acres in an observation Hill, popularly known as Mount Mount in Swahili.
It was founded on 25 October 1961 as the University of Dar es Salaam (UD), a Corporate College of the University of London. It was temporarily hosted in buildings owned by the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) located in Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam from its inception until 1964 when it was moved to the current location in the Hill.
At its inception, it had only one faculty, a Faculty of Law, and 13 students among them one female, Julie Manning. In 1963, it became the Constituent College of the University of East Africa along with Makerere University in Uganda and the University of Nairobi in Kenya. UDSM became a full-fledged university on 1 July 1970 through Act No. 12 of 1970.
Since UDSM has grown in terms of student intake, academic units, research capacity and educational programs.
There are two constitutional colleges which are Dar es Salaam University of Education and Mkwawa University of Education in Iringa with seven campus colleges, four schools and five institutions hosting various academic departments covering a wide range of programs, making it a comprehensive university.
