Mtwara-Mikindani is a surname that merges two words that are Mtwara and Mikindani.. These two parts namely Mtwara and Mikindani were popular centers where each was due to its causes .The term” Ntwara ” is now a Kimakonde meaning to be invaded (raided and taken hostage). Later this area became the home of Arabs and other people who had been captured as slaves and sold.

The term Mikindani is derived from the word Mikinda i.e. the area where coconut trees do not grow/thrive properly.The real inhabitants of this area are the punches, the Yao and the Makua. 75% of Mtwara’s population are Makonde,followed by Yao and the latter are Makua. As is often the case with other regions of Tanzania, there are some people in Mtwara.

The history of the establishment of full jurisdiction of the Mtwara-Mikindani Municipal Council began in 1948, during the period of colonial rule, the Port of Mtwara from Mikindani where it was originally located.

Mtwara Mikindani municipality has a size of 163 square kilometers equivalent to 0.97% of the total area of Mtwara Region. Mtwara Mikindani municipality to the East is bordered by the Indian Ocean, to the north, to the West and to the South is bordered by Mtwara District Council. This administrative council is divided into the following constituencies consisting of one electoral constituency, 18 wards, 111 streets and 2 divisions.
